About the Author
Sako (pronounced "SAY-ko" or "Seiko," like the watch corporation) was born in New Mexico and spent an unfortunately long portion of his youth growing up in the great armpit of America. He escaped as soon as he could and now lives comfortably in Japan with his wife and rapacious offspring.
The rest of this section will take the form of a question-and-answer session. If you have a question you would like to ask, feel free to contact Sako!
Isn't "Sako" a bit of an unusual name?
Yes, that is the usual observation.
Is it a Japanese name or something?
No, not really, but it does sound a lot like a Japanese woman's name, Seiko, which confuses the heck out of people who meet me for the first time expecting a half-Japanese woman and finding out that I'm actually an all-American man.
So what's the story behind your name, then?
It's probably pretty similar to the story behind this guy's name, but he tells it better, so I'll point you to the FAQ he wrote and let you figure out the rest for yourself.
Hey, didn't you tell me your name was Irish?!!?
Possibly. I used to tell people that, until I met a girl from Ireland who told me she'd never heard anything like it before. These days I usually tell people it's Finnish (a lie that I'll have to discard if I ever meet Linus Torvalds, I suppose).
You lie about your name?! What's up with that?
It's nothing personal, but as Zero points out in his FAQ, explaining your name to everyone who asks about it is a really time-consuming thing to have to do every time you meet someone new. Telling people it's Irish or Finnish or whatever is a white lie that enables us to get back to talking about more important things. Don't hate me for it.
In my own defense, however, I should point out that it is not a total lie. Sako is a Finnish name. There is a very well known Finnish company that produces rifles that shares my name (in fact, many Europeans often assume that I have Finnish ancestry when they see my name). I just don't think my parents knew that when they chose this name for me.
Okay, fine. What about the name of your site, where did that come from?
Well, the initial inspiration came from Robert Graves' novel I, Claudius, but you can't register domain names with spaces and commas in them, so I had to choose something else. Around that same time, the iMac and i-mode phones were just becoming popular, so i-sako it was.
Why doesn't your site have some catchy name like Tokyo Biscuit Mix or something?
Because that would suck.
